Central High School’s folklorico group will be performing at the High School Show Offs on March 9th, 2019 at Warnors Center from 7-9 p.m. This performance showcases the hard work of 12 folklorico groups from different high schools presented by Danzantes del Valle Coalition from Arte Americas. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in room 301 at East campus or at the door for $15 and front row VIP seats are $20.  Tickets may also be purchased online at the Warnors website.

I can’t wait for people to see this!”

— Jenny Cortez

Advanced folklorico students have been practicing for this show since the beginning of the year, dedicating much of their time to mastering intricate dances. For many dancers, it will be their first time performing in the show. “We selected the performing group based on grades and tryout scores and we have been fine-tuning the presentation,” said instructor Rosa Gonzalez. After diligently practicing to earn her place, senior Jenny Cortez said, “I’m excited. We worked really hard on this set. I can’t wait for people to see this!”

This year, the performing group will be dancing to two songs from the state of Yucatan. The numbers are especially precise and challenging. Gonzalez explains, “The songs are Chinito Koy Koy, a fast-paced song with elaborate footwork, Mi Lindo Yucatan where students will have to dance on a small box 1 foot x 1 foot box, and La Danza de las Cintas where they will braid and unbraid ribbons as they dance.” Yet, the dancers are confident they’ll provide a show to be remembered, “We’ve been practicing these dances since the first semester for hours, both during and after school,” senior Angel Martinez explained.

Gonzalez encourages the Central and larger community to support this program and these accomplished folklorico students by attending this entertaining, cultural event. “Come out and cheer us on while we are on stage,” Gonzalez said.
